Harriers Triumphantly Battle Freezing Fog In Canterbury 10

37 Harriers turned out for the Canterbury 10. The conditions certainly not ideal with freezing fog, and many icy patches not the best when coupled with some tough hills. There were 17 debuts, including  a very impressive 1.06.20 from Adam Elston and an excellent run from Philip Hadler coming in at 1.48.28! There were also some impressive PB’s, 7 in total, including Gemma Jeffrey who came in at 1.16.54, a PB by two and a half minutes and Melanie Christodoulou who took four minutes off of last years debut time, coming in at 1.19.42, well done girls! There were three runners in the top 50, Simon Jones, 7th 57.41, Yiannis Christodoulou, 28th 1.01.11 and Paul Knight, 47th 1.02.50.

Record Turn Out for Harriers at Club Championship 10k

14525207_1354601981231558_6454009238556425524_o A record numbers of Harriers turned out for the Annual Club Championship 10k race , incorporated in the  Ashford Givaudan 10k , on Sunday 9th October.  Despite the wet conditions there were 48 Harriers finishers in the race, 16 women and 32 men, a club record for any event since being formed in 1993.  As usual there were plenty of PB’s, 22 in total, along with 10 debuts and a team prize for the women, courtesy of Jenny Benson, who was also the first female finisher overall in the event( her first ever race win) alongside Jo Norrington and Jennie Gardiner, who ran very impressive PB’s in  42.11 and 42.29 respectively.

The men had a great race too, with Simon Jones being the first Harrier back in another PB of 34.29 for 6th place in the event. He was closely followed by Paul Knight and Jacob Hussey, in 37.15 and 38.08 respectively.

Tina Jones was 3rd in the Vet 60 females in a speedy 52.38 and we also had Phil Hadler as the first ever Vet 70 finisher in 1.04.23.

Overall the event was a resounding success and we look forward to doing it all over again next year, lets see if we can beat these records!!

Canterbury Harriers excelled  in the range of races over the Easter Weekend despite some really testing weather conditions. Weather wise Good Friday proved to be the best of the days and Simon Jones started off his weekend in the Folkestone 10 Mile with an excellent 7th place and a PB in a time of  56 minutes and 17 seconds . On Saturday we had nine  runners in the Cardiff Half Marathon ( doubling as the IAAF Half Marathon World Champs). In what proved to be a spectacular race  , with storm force winds in the last two to three miles ,Tom Millard set his second overall  club record in the space of two weeks with a fantastic time of 01:11:37 for 37th place. The following day , with the wind and the rain having made it`s way to Canterbury  , Simon Jones decided to brave the elements over the tough Canterbury 10K course and was rewarded with first place in a time of 35:05. Fiona Tester won the ladies race in a time of 46;50. With Tom Purnell finishing third in 36:06  and James Scanlon( fresh from winning the Whitstable Park Run on the previous day)  in 5th place with a time of 38:32. the Harriers also picked up the men`s team prize – see picture above.Full results for the weekend races can be found on the website results page.

Tom Millard storms home to win the Lydd 20 mile race on Sunday 13th March

A total of 20 Harriers took part in the Lydd 20 mile Road Race on Sunday 13th March , a target race for those doing Spring Marathons. Tom Millard  had an outstanding run storming home to win the race in a PB time of 1 hr 53 min (by 8 mins) and setting a course record and a new Harriers club record in the process. He was followed home by Tom Purnell in 5th place with a host of Harriers  having outstanding debut runs over the race distance or recording PB`s. The Harriers flew home with the team prize at the Rye Summer Classic Series 10K, with thanks to Simon Jones in third position (35:11), Joe Thomsett in seventh (38:29) and Barry Hopkins in ninth (40:28).  Alex Davis also produced a PB of 1:13:51.

At the Road Athletics Aylesham & East Kent 10K, despite the wet and windy conditions, Thomas Purnell came in second position (also achieving a PB) with a time of 36:49.  The Harriers also had three further members in the top ten: Neil Armitage (44:25), Nathan Bradley (45:54) and Fiona Tester (46:50).  Fiona also picked up the 1st Lady, closely followed by Bethany Burnett who was the 3rd Lady in 49:00.

The tough weather conditions also didn’t stop Philip Wyard (33:15) and John Cooper (37:08) at the Mid Kent 5 Miler.

What a great week for the Canterbury Harriers – two first place positions for athletes that are shining through.  At the Samphire Hoe 5K Summer Series on Wednesday evening, Simon Jones picked up first place in an excellent 17:15.  On the same night, Tom Millard leaped his way to first position in the final lap, in an outstanding 16:57 (a new PB), at the Track Athletics Canterbury 5000m. Great results all-round!

The Canterbury Harriers Jets had a blinding result at the Saxon Shore Relay last week finishing in first position in 5:14:00!  The relay was a 47 mile multi-terrain, which in the hot weather conditions, was no easy run.

At the Dinosaur 10K in Deal, Tom Millard set the pace as the first Harrier in 36:40.  James Taplin gained a PB of 44:22, as did Nathan Bradley in 45:02 and David Taplin in 48:25.  The Harriers also picked up the team prize as Tom Millard was closely followed by Thomas Purnell, Adam Stokes and Jacob Hussey.

Jones Races to Victory at the Podplus Ashford 5K

The Canterbury Harriers’ own Simon Jones raced to victory at the Podplus Ashford Summer 5K Series, gaining first position in an excellent time of 17:08.

At the Harvel 5 five-miler, despite very hot weather conditions and a muddy terrain, three Harriers’ debuts gained respectable results: Thomas Purnell (9th – 29:38), Barry Hopkins (49th – 33:27) and Neil Armitage (52nd – 33:37).

At the new course of the Ramsgate Rotary Club 10K, Jonathan Thirlwell made the top twenty with a result of 45:57.

Excellent results were seen at the Southend Half Marathon 2014 in very hot weather conditions by Mark Cooper (104th – 1:32:06), Philip Wyard (112th – 1:32:37) and Craig Thomas (136th – 1:34:12).

PBs were gained by the Canterbury Harriers at the Bupa 10k on Sunday.  Two of their runners, Tom Millard and Yiannis Christodoulou, gained positions in the top 600 with finishing times of 36:36 and 39:38 respectively. For Yiannis, this now places him in the elite under 40 minute category. The Harriers’ Press Officer, Melanie Georgiades, also completed her first 10K for Mesothelioma UK after months of training, meeting her target of under 1 hour at 57:35.  She stated “the Bupa 10K is an excellent event if inspiration is what you need; around every corner there were bands playing and the streets were lined with crowds of people cheering you on.  If this doesn’t make you go faster, nothing will!”.

The Rye 10 mile also resulted in great results from Philip Wyard and Mark Cooper of 1:09:34 and 1:10:37 respectively.  The terrain was hilly with warm and sunny conditions.

The Folkstone Coastal 10K resulted in four PBs for the Harriers ladies: Jennie Gardner (45:50), Fiona Tester (46:20), Julie Bradford (49:21) and Shirley Pullen (58:35).

At the Littlestone Lifeboat 10K Promenade Dash, Jennifer Lucas gained 1st Vet 55 with an excellent time of 54:03.

Minnis Bay relays resulted in the Harriers’ male Vet 50 gaining 2nd position, leading to a current overall joint 1st with Deal TRI.  As well as this, their male Vet 60 also gained second position, resulting in a current overall 1st position.

Folkestone Relays and Marathon Bonanza

The Folkestone Relays last Tuesday led to excellent results for the Canterbury Harriers.  In the Male Vet 50 the Harriers came in first position, with a total time of 51:02.  They also gained first position in the Lady Vet 35 with a time of 57:11; a mere 2 second’s gap to Folkestone RC A in second place.

John Cooper from the Canterbury Harriers travelled to Milton Keynes for the Sketchers Milton Keynes Marathon, despite feeling unwell the previous evening.  Even with the hot weather, John managed to complete the marathon in an impressive 4:14:59.

In the Bewl Water Half Marathon, Penny Birchall gained second Vet 55 at 1:49:47 and Wendy Smith gained third Vet 55 at 2:00:51, in spite of the wet and windy weather conditions.
