Cross Country Season in Full Swing

Sunday 24th sees the third race in the Kent Fitness League series at Oxleas Woods.

Following the relatively benign ground conditions for the first race at Sevenoaks we were treated to slightly tougher conditions for the second race at Swanley Park. Oxleas Woods looks as if it will be the most interesting and challenging yet with the 5.5 mile circuit providing a healthy mixture of uphills  and downhills with some quality mud and a few fallen trees to negotiate for good measure.

The Harriers are in a strong position going into the third race and we still have hopes of retaining the title which we won last year. We do however  need a big turn out on Sunday and for all of the remaining races – remember the club pays the entry fees for all paid up members. Peter Hogben Storms To Third Win

DSCN1630

Peter Hogben recorded his third 10K race victory of the year, and his second in consecutive weeks,  in  an outstanding PB run in the Faversham 10K on Sunday with team mates Thomas Millard and Joe Thomsett also recording impressive  top ten finishes.  Peters previous wins were in the Wingham 10K and the Stelling Minnis 10K  and his performances in setting PB`s at each of these races were underscored by the fact that all three races are over fairly tough courses.

Russell Williams RIP.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Russell Williams on Saturday after a short illness. Russell was a longstanding and respected member of the Harriers, a stalwart of our cross country and relay teams and one who was always willing to give of his time in helping out at club events and at the local park run.

Russell Williams

He was an elite standard runner both as a senior and a vet but he was a quiet and modest man who rarely spoke of his impressive achievements during his running career. Our thoughts are with his wife Jo and family at this sad time.

Harriers are Kent Fitness League Champions

Canterbury Harriers are the new Kent Fitness League cross country champions following the final race of the seven race series hosted by the club at Blean Woods , Rough Common on Sunday. The club were comfortable winners of the mens, ladies and combined team events.

Harriers WinningTeam

Mark Ford finished in third place in the individual mens championship and Faye Roberts finished third in the ladies championship. A fantastic achievement by the Harriers all the more impressive given the extremely tough conditions throughout all of the races following the wettest year on record.

A big thank you to all who helped set up the race and marshall on the day with a special mention for the efforts of Roy Gooderson as Race Director and John Hartley as Acting Supreme Chief Marshall ( in the absence of the normal? Supreme Chief Marshall, Steve Clark, who was unavoidably detained on Crib Goch).

Whitstable 10K 2013

Entries are now open for the 2013 Whitstable 10k road race. The 2013 race will be held at 11am on the 6th May Bank Holiday Monday at The Waterfront Club. The course starts from Tankerton Slopes and goes out to Hampton Pier at Herne Bay. The terrain is mainly flat, with the second half of the race being along the promenade by the beach huts, and the course should produce some fast times.

This year a pound from each entry will go to the Demelza House Hospice Care for Children charity.

This will be the fourteenth year Canterbury Harriers will be organising the road race and we hope that it will be an enjoyable event for all.

Once again we are particularly grateful for the sponsorship ofBailey’s Nissan, Canterbury (01227 766777) and we would also like to thank The Waterfront Club for letting us use their facilities as the race headquarters.

Please bear in mind this is a particularly popular race and the race entry limit is normally reached well before the closing date, so get your entries in soon.
