Over the summer solstice weekend this year, we travelled up to the land of the midnight sun – beautiful Tromsø within the Arctic Circle – to run the Midnight Sun Marathon on 20th June. We visited with fellow Canterbury Harriers, Shirley and Jane, and another friend, Karen, who each ran the 10k race.
The race began at 8.30pm, and took us through the night in full daylight, hence the midnight sun! The route went from the city, over the bridge towards the stunning Arctic Cathedral, all the way out to the remote mountains and views of the silky fjords. The route then turned back on itself over the bridge, where we were delighted to see our friends supporting us in the final 10k, back through the city towards the finish line. We crossed the line at 1.30am, still in broad daylight! The support from the locals was amazing, cheering and cow bells on the route, even in the most remote areas!
We would highly recommend this unusual event to anyone with a passion for nature and running!
